The Design by Data Advanced Master® in Computational Design, Digital Manufacturing and Building Technologies provides attendees with a cross-disciplinary culture of computational design and a comprehensive knowledge of cutting-edge technologies in the fields of parametric architecture, robotics, digital manufacturing and 3D printing for the construction industry.
Applications are open for the second edition of the Design by Data Advanced Master® in Computational Design, Digital Manufacturing and Building Technologies opening in September 2017 in Paris. Design by Data provides attendees with a cross-disciplinary culture of computational design and a comprehensive knowledge of cutting-edge technologies in the fields of parametric architecture, robotics, digital manufacturing and 3D printing for the construction industry.
The program is designed for a selected group of architects, engineers, and designers and it offers a variety of courses, fabrication and prototyping workshops, conferences, digital talks and networking events. The Advanced Master is run by the prestigious École des Ponts Paris Tech and takes place in a number of locations in Paris including innovation hubs, coworking spaces, art galleries and fablabs.
The program is a 12 month Executive Part-time course (one week per month) including over 350 hours of teaching, a final prototyping project, a thesis and a viva. Besides the one week per month teaching sessions, courses, candidates can both keep their professional activities or develop their research and projects using the coworking and fablab facilities (full-time membership included in the program fee).
The next edition opens in September 2017, in Paris.

In order to bring together high-level scientific research with the fablab movement, the school partnered up with some of the most active and vibrant coworking spaces and fablabs in Paris to offer students the best collaborative learning experience. The program offers access to coworking spaces and digital fabrication tools within the official international network of fablabs.
At the same time, the main academic partner of the program is the Navier Laboratory, a mixed research unit of École des Ponts ParisTech, IFSTTAR and the CNRS who brings together over 170 people. Within the lab, the team “Architectured Materials and Structures” tackles research in structural engineering and materials mechanics with a special focus on lightweight structures and complex geometries. The laboratory, together with the research community Thinkshell, are strongly supporting the Design by Data program by following students research from a scientific perspective.
About the director:
Francesco Cingolani is an architect, professor, and co-founder of Volumes, an innovation hub in Paris including a coworking space, a foodlab and a fablab. Francesco is also co-founder of Fab Academy Paris and the Fab City Grand Paris association (fab.city). His projects and research focus on exploration of new territories of innovation merging architecture and engineering.
I’ve been working as an architect for years in very transdisciplinar environments. For design practices having an unconventional approach to architecture and construction, it is very difficult to find the right profiles to hire. A clear example has been given to me along my collaboration with Hugh Dutton Associés - hdaparis.com - a parisian based design office now partner of the Design by Data program. The studio works at the intersection of engineering, design and performance-driven architecture and it was struggling to find professionals able to go beyond the boundaries of these disciplines. This is why we wanted to create this program in association with a prestigious school : our aim is to train this whole new era of architects and creative engineers - Francesco Cingolani
About the students:
14 students coming from different countries, including Colombia, Australia, Spain, France, Morocco and India have joined the 2016/2017 Design by Data Advanced Master edition. The majority of students have a background in architecture and structural engineering but the program is also open to unconventional and specifically selected profiles coming from digital arts and natural sciences.
Students develop a research project during the year with a final prototype and they can both work within a company or be in an entrepreneur position.
Currently, the ongoing research projects include:
- Robotic fabrication tools applied to traditional stone building
- Cinetic façades
- Social micro-architectures in the public space
- A furniture design brand based on neuroscience data
- A vault structure assembly without temporary support
- A performance-driven design self-sufficient greenhouse for food and energy production
The program also welcome new ways of approaching the design and architecture practice, as it’s the case of Paula Echeverri Montes, one of our students from Colombia, whose research focuses on how new practices and collaboration opportunities may arise by creating a local community of makers, designers and thinkers as an external layer of her architectural practice. For that, she’s working hand in hand with other students, assisting them during their fabrication and prototyping sessions, in order to explore how merging design with fabrication can open up new creatives approaches and change the way we think about digital fabrication and design. Once back to Columbia after the Advanced Master, she plans to implement a fablab to promote and feed her design practice.

About the School:
École des Ponts ParisTech - created in 1747 under the name École Royale des Ponts et Chaussées, is a higher education establishment that trains engineers and designers to a high level of scientific, technical and general competency.
It is one of the most prestigious engineering institutions in Europe with a persistent and strong desire to innovate in the future of building and design. That’s why the school has launched in 2015 the DESIGN by DATA, an Advanced Master in Computational Design, Digital Manufacturing and Building Technologies directed by architect and designer Francesco Cingolani.
About Paris:
Paris is standing on the international scene as one of most vibrant capital in Europe and in the world. With a wide range of fablabs, coworking spaces and startup incubators, including the world's largest, Paris is definitely on the map as one of the leading capital for innovation with a strong strategy based on open innovation and strong communities.
Paris also recently joined the Fab City network, a global initiative to promote new urban models for locally productive and globally connected self-sufficient cities. The project is a huge opportunity for architects, urban planners, designers, makers and citizens to shape the future of the city based on the shift from ‘Products In Trash Out’ (PITO) to ‘Data In Data Out’ (DIDO). In the future, a city’s imports and exports would mostly be found in the form of data (information, knowledge, design, code) and it confirms the vision of data as the new material for designers to deal with in architecture and in the construction industry.
To complete the scenario, Paris is also hosting in September 2017 the Design Modeling Symposium on the topic of Humanizing Digital Reality, a prestigious event gathering architects, researchers, engineers and designers from all over the world. And in the summer of 2018, the city will host the Fab City Symposium organized as a part of the annual meeting of the international Fab Lab network.
