UTS have recently unveiled a major adaptive refit proposal by DRAW for their largest and most important ceremonial space, the Great Hall. DRAW’s proposal for the spaces provides UTS with a new ceremonial heart, fundamentally transforming the existing mute Great Hall interior into a cathedral-like space, enveloped by a perforated metal skin that incorporates leading-edge audio/visual technology. The benefits of building information modeling (BIM) tools yield the greatest advantage when used across an integrated project team. According to many BIM proponents, the rewards multiply when the technology is deployed along with a delivery method that fosters a collaborative environment and ensures early involvement of key stakeholders. Design and construction team members working on a 289-bed hospital complex on the Mission Bay campus of the University of California, San Francisco, are relying on such a process. Although the approximately $1.5 billion project will not be complete until 2014, they are already realizing benefits.

The Anglo-German practice Sauerbruch Hutton was declared the winner of the M9 International Architectural Competition at M9 / A New Museum for a New City, an exhibition on the competition designs arranged in the premises of the future cultural pole in Mestre. Six firms participated in the competition: Agence Pierre-Louis Faloci, Carmassi Studio di Architettura, David Chipperfield Architects, Mansilla+Tuñón Arquitectos, Sauerbruch Hutton and Souto Moura Arquitectos.

Organized by Northeastern University and Tim Love, Associate Professor and Principal of Utile, the Typology Redux conference will consider the market-driven building typologies. When architects design office buildings, apartment buildings, and other market-driven building types, an unwritten set of rules establishes the framework for design exploration.

Czech architectural office Mjölk Architekti made a remarkable contribution to public space utilization in Liberec, their city of residence. Without a legal permit for construction and surprising everyone in the city, they built a public sauna on an abandoned city dam. The preparation took five days and building time was eight hours.

Home for Children and Adolescent / J. MAYER H. Architects + Sebastian Finckh Located near the edge of the forest in Hamburg, a new residential building is now finished as a home for children and adolescents. The characteristics of the building are based on a two colour relief facade embracing a compact house volume. The aim of Slow Architecture Exhibition 2010 is not only to engage with architects but also with the wider public and thus the proposal is to exhibit the selected schemes within a specifically converted barge travelling slowly on the Grand Canal via various moorings including Belmont Mill and Tullamore and finishing in Dublin.

Jared Langevin shared with us his project Cross Cultivation. The project, designed along with Joshua Cummings and Gabriel Cuéllar was awarded 2nd place in the 2010 USGBC New York Natural Talent Design Competition (Emerging Professionals category). South Africa-based Vivid Architects shared with us their project “Crystal Towers”. The development comprises a 5 star hotel, 90 luxury residences, a standalone office building, and a 80m steel suspension foot bridge. More images after the break.

The upcoming 11 Architectural Festival Towns will take place between September 20 and October 3 in Corfu Island, Greece. It’s an open-air event, that gathers up to 500-700 young architects from Russia and abroad. The aim of every team is to create an architectural installation accordingly the common theme. Sattler Winery / Architects Collective The Erich Sattler Winery is located in the village of Tadten, a typical village in the Austrian wine region of Burgenland along the border to Hungary. The property is 12 x 120 m with two existing buildings and a new construction in between. Towards the centre of the village is an existing L-shaped residential building with a courtyard and public access for pedestrians.
