Architectural competition Griffintown Interrupted seeks to revive Montreal’s oldest industrial neighbourhood and has attracted submissions from over 40 teams around the world. Architects and designers from 10 countries have come forward to propose innovative, temporary structures for one of Montreal’s most hotly debated neighbourhoods.

The areas for expansion are either through the current high density processes, which begin to populate flood plains, or to move eastwards denseifying east London breaking through the green belt towards the Thames estuary, where a new second generation London could rise from the waves. The idea is not new, the Thames estuary has been the topic of intense debate through the possibility of building a floating island airport off the coast of Kent, and a nature reserve with a flood gate connecting Essex and Kent in its core via a high speed monorail. These radical approaches cannot be discarded without intense exploration, could the next east London generation be a floating one?

Dwelling In Avila / A-cero A dwelling of generous proportions developed over a single storey to facilitate the indoor-outdoor connection and to make the most of the environment in which it stands. Surrounded by meadows, tree groves, chestnut, pine and oak trees and wildlife represented by stags, wild boar and roe deer, the edifice establishes a recognised link with the traditional architecture and vernacular customs (read more…)

To coincide with the launch of their new Personal Factory 4 services, Google SketchUp is announcing the Ponoko 3D Printing Challenge. Basically, the challenge is to produce a piece of instructional content that’s equal parts enlightening and entertaining. Each entry must be titled “How to use Google SketchUp for Ponoko 3D printing,” but aside from that, the format is pretty open. Text, images and video (or some combination of the three) are all fair game.

C. F. Møller Architects, together with SLA and Rambøll, have been selected by a unanimous jury as the winners of a large competition to design an extension to the University of Copenhagen‘s Panum complex on Blegdamsvej in the heart of Copenhagen.

The expansion will make a significant impact in the cityscape, with a science tower which will form an identity-creating, sculptural focal point for the entire Nørre Campus. The project also includes an urban park which will benefit both the Panum building and the surrounding city.

Passy Cultural Center / Beckmann N’Thepe “Although unusually set within the site, the building subtly blends in with the surroundings. With its long timber roof, it creates a new horizon, a cut-out silhouette that forms a huge sculpture on the scale of the landscape. Video: Experiment process model

Rasmus Svingel shared with us a movie of a model he put together, part of his current work at Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. It’s an investigation of space and program diversity through movement. The model arose from a digital model that were processed into an anolog structure.

Remix Architecture Competition

We received this interesting competition which proposes a new concept. The aim is to build a know-how on running alternative, open license-based two-phase architectural competitions. Participants of the first phase are required to submit their works under Creative Commons licenses – this allows in the second phase to feel freely inspired by and reuse others’ designs without critical legal restrictions.

Patterson Ob/Gyn / buildingstudio The site fronts on a new feeder road connected to a nearby expressway. It sits between two other professional buildings of matching colonial facades complete with artificial dormers and mass- produced Georgian columns. While the first inclination was to make an expressive contemporary insertion, upon reflection this approach would have competed as just another “sign” like the traditional works, just another façade treatment facing the street (read more…)
