This time the focus of attention is a table designed for the Agnelli home in Rome: Manzù imagined a tabletop mounted on a central support secured to the floor. With the slenderness typical of Eero Saarinen’s designs and the resourcefulness of Pierre Chareau, he styled a base with a sculptural quality that supports a round top, with a central part turning relative to the outer crown where people sit at, so as to provide more effective service to each. The table with central leg by Pio Manzù is the result of a profile rotating around a central axis. The archive drawings show how the profile was designed according to different geometric profiles, which generated a series of shapes with different tensions. Inspired by the ultra-comfortable chair created for the 3-Michelin star Four Season restaurant in Hong Kong, the Viola chair, designed by AB Concept for Poltrona Frau, has elegant lines that sacrifice nothing in terms of comfort. AB Concept has revisited a classic design, giving it a decidedly contemporary touch. The result is a product with great formal lightness and a solid and void effect which enhances the dining table chair both when it is used alone and when it is combined with a table. Thanks to its soft and comfortable curves, the wooden backrest also creates the armrest and is embellished with a weave consisting of sixty saddle-leather laces which connect it to the frame. Its harmonious and ergonomic proportions, combined with a generous and welcoming seat, guarantee the utmost comfort even when sitting for long periods. Despite being solid and well constructed, Viola is extremely light and easy to move. The frame of the Viola chair is made from solid ash in a Moka or Wenge stain embellished with a weave made from dark brown or natural saddle-leather laces. The seat spring system consists of elastic belts. There are soft cushions on the seat and backrest. The seat cushion is filled with polyurethane foam and polyester wadding while the backrest is padded with down and has an insert in polyurethane foam. The two cushions form a single whole which is fixed to the frame using two snap buttons. The removable upholstery of the Viola chair is in Pelle Frau® leather or fabric.
