Agency2017: Australasian Student Architecture Congress in Sydney

The Australasian Student Architecture Congress (ASAC)—titled Agency 2017—will be held in Sydney from the 28th of November to the 2nd of December. It will be the first congress held in Sydney since 1999 and student-led by ASAC Inc., a non-profit student body based in NSW, Australia.

ASAC has been student-led and held across the Asia-Pacific Region biennially since the 1960s. With a rich and diverse history, the congress brings practitioners and students together over a series of events providing an environment that encourages collaboration, networking, and the critical thinking needed for a knowledge exchange network between professionals and students alike.

Central to Agency 2017 will be a series of events including workshops, design/build studios, round tables and debates attended by academics, designers, architects and students from across the globe. In the spirit of congresses past, the 2017 congress will be a “lived agency”: a community living true to the values of the future we desire to create. It will act as a beacon of hope and optimism for the incoming future generation of built environment professionals.

What is Architectural Agency?

Agency2017 will explore three sub-themes: Agency to cultivate, Agency to act and Agency to Catalyse. Each Session will run across a whole day and will be anchored by leading practitioners and academics from Australia, New Zealand and around the world.

ASAC Inc. have been teasing out ideas and perspectives and challenging each other to think outside the square. The team are excited to represent the student body across Australia and New Zealand to bring you a rich event. ASAC Inc. comprises a multi-disciplinary team of students and graduates in Architecture, Media and Communication, Computational Design, Urban Design and Engineering.

We are interested in the agency that architects have to encourage and ensure equitable access to the rich cultural life of the global city and its peripheries. How do we, as future built environment professionals, question the center and boundaries of the status-quo?
