Strelka KB has announced two Russia-based design teams, Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau and BuroMoscow, as the winners of the design competition for two Moscow metro stations. The stations, Nizhniye Mnevnik and Terekhovo, are both located to the northwest of the capital. These two new stations, which include designs for an outdoor pavilion, a street underpass, a ticket booth and a street underpass, will extend the Moscow Metro network and are expected to be fully functioning in 2018.
Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau’s design for Nizhniye Mnevnik focuses on structural elements that are activated by the introduction of red surfaces. The pure form is revealed with a symmetric, free-standing rectangular object that frames the ticket hall and extends below into the subway platform.
The Terekhovo station, designed by BuroMoscow, is located in a developing area of the city. Situated in an open site, the classically styled pavilion is recognizable even from far away due to its high portals that are illuminated by a letter M. The underpass is minimally detailed, but riders are guided towards the platform by a gradually decreasing number of light fixtures. Once inside, the platform area aesthetic is one of an infinite and airy space, as it is illuminated by reflected light.
Head of the jury and Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Development and Construction, Marat Khusnullin, had this to say about the competition: "The competition attracted a lot of interest from both the general public and the professional community. The status of Moscow Metro as a unique world-renowned architectural phenomenon has greatly contributed to this interest. We received 121 applications from 16 countries. The winning projects for Terekhovo and Nizhnie Mnevniki stations were chosen for their unique and original design and perfect vision delivery in accordance with the highest standards of contemporary architecture."
