Developed by Choi+Shine Architects, the BIT Light is a magnetic modular lighting system that offers endless configuration possibilities which can be arranged, deconstructed and rearranged in seconds. The system's main component is the "BIT", a linear lighting element comprised of an LED light source in a translucent polycarbonate tube that provides both protection and structural support. At each end of the BIT are conductor pads which join magnetically to the small nickel connecting elements, offering infinite possibilities for arrangement either as a flat wall-mounted lighting element, a suspended configuration, or even as a self-supporting three-dimensional lighting structure.
Each BIT added to the system adds 460 lumens of light, meaning that the more BITs are added, the brighter the lighting arrangement. Additionally, the BIT Light system can be controlled with a standard dimmer switch, meaning that users can have complete control over the amount of light produced. Power from the system comes from either a low-voltage wall- or ceiling-mounted outlet which resembles one of the connecting pieces, or from an internal battery.
With magnetic connections and no external wires, the system can easily be manipulated with no technical knowledge. This is made not only easy but safe, thanks to the polycarbonate shells which remain cool in use, and the fact that the nickel casing of the connecting elements is earthed. In use, the exposed conductors on both the connecting elements and on the BITs can be covered with magnetic insulating caps.
Currently, the BIT Light system comes with short linear BITs and cubic connectors, however Choi+Shine Architects are already developing new shapes for the BITs and connectors with a variety of angles which will offer even more possible configurations.
