Despite her position as one of the world's most prominent and successful architects, Zaha Hadid yesterday revealed that there is one thing she feels is missing from her portfolio: a skyscraper in London. Speaking to BD at the announcement of her Science Museum competition win, Hadid said "I’d love to do a tower in London but it hasn’t arrived." More of Hadid's comments after the break.
If Hadid were to be commissioned for a London skyscraper, it would mark a significant step in a market which she has only recently broken into. Despite being based in London, her firm's first permanent completed project in the city, the Evelyn Grace Academy, was only realized in 2010.
Reflecting on possible reasons for the gap in her portfolio, Hadid said: "I’m sure there are a lot of really great clients but maybe they don’t associate us with corporate or residential work. They think we do only cultural buildings but that’s not necessarily the case. We have done a lot of work in China and America and it would be very nice for me to do something in London."
Hadid has done a number of towers in other countries, having recently revealed designs for three towers in Brisbane, Australia.
