Planning Finally Granted for Chelsea Barracks Scheme

A design by Squire and Partners for the controversial Chelsea Barracks site has been approved for planning. The approval comes five years after an earlier scheme by Richard Rogers was derailed by Prince Charles, sparking a row over what some perceived as the Prince abusing his status by bypassing proper planning procedure. Since then the plans were put on hold due to the UK's poor economy, before being resurrected last year.

The phase one plans by Squire and Partners feature 74 properties in three 8 storey blocks, with prices expected to range from £2 million to the "super luxury" 2-storey penthouses for up to £50 million. Developer Qatari Diar won outline planning permission in 2011 for a total of 448 apartments as well as a sport centre, health centre and retail uses. Dixon Jones is working on the masterplan for the scheme, however details of the remaining phases have not yet been released.

Commenting on the scheme, chairman of the council’s planning committee Alastair Moss said: "This is a very high profile site and this design really sets the tone... This is a well thought-through design that doesn’t jar with its surroundings, but is contemporary in its approach."

Construction on this phase of the Chelsea Barracks development will start within weeks, with completion set for 2018.
