Open Call: Design Competition for the Creation of Sejong Park and Symbolic Sculpture

Purpose

The Sejongno Park, established in 1992, has only undergone minor repairs over the past 30 years while maintaining its existing facilities and structure. Even after the restructuring of Gwanghwamun Plaza in August 2022, the park still faces limitations for visitors due to its outdated facilities and enclosed spatial layout. Meanwhile, the Gwanghwamun area has experienced significant changes to accommodate a new future, including the reopening of Gwanghwamun Plaza in August 2022, the rebuilding of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, remodeling of the KT Building, and the relocation of the U.S. Embassy. It is essential to comprehensively redesign Sejongno Park to improve its aging facilities and enable better integration with the evolving surrounding developments

This design competition aims to address the spatial limitations that currently disconnect Sejongno Park from its surroundings. At the same time, it designs to create open spaces in order to enhance the connection with Gwanghwamun Plaza and expand civic areas while providing essential amenities such as dining options, restrooms, and indoor relaxation areas that are currently lacking. Furthermore, the competition aspires to establish a space that resonates with future generations, honoring those who sacrificed their lives to protect the freedom of the Republic of Korea and expressing our gratitude.
